What does one toke over the line mean?
The word "toke" is slang for inhaling marijuana smoke. When they say "one toke over the line" they are implying that they've smoked too much marijuana and gotten too high. When they said "sweet Mary" they were talking about marijuana which was sometimes called Mary Jane. Lawrence Welk and the singers of the song heard the words Jesus and sweet Mary, and mistook it as a religious song. Your UA-cam page is very interesting! I've subscribed.
